Most of the independent studios are founded by individual, trailblazing entrepreneurs— many of them can even rival some of the biggest and best facilities around the world. Yellow Box Studio is no exception. Set up in 1995, Yellow Box has grown into a thriving venture that specialises equally in recording, mixing and mastering, with an experienced sound team from all over the world, as well as impressive equipment and client lists.
Owned and managed by Rennie Gomes and Ricky Ho, Yellow Box was created from scratch nearly 20 years ago. Gomes and Ho initially set up the studio on Telok Ayer Street, one of Singapore’s earliest thoroughfares.
Gomes, best known for his unconventional methods and winning several international awards for his creative sound design, started running the studio after having a decade experience creating and mixing for TV commercials and films.
“I had a great opportunity to work with four of the best music producers in town – Ricky Ho, Iskandar Ismail, Shah Tahir and Jeremy Lum,” Gomes commented when asked what drove him to put up the studio. “The biggest difference in running a studio was learning the business aspect of it— having to manage costs and also a team of creative engineers and composers. It’s a very relationship-based industry and keeping the work cutting edge, at the same time, keeping clients satisfied was always the main call of each day.”
“It makes up 99.9 per cent of my life. You never stop thinking of work… be it managing a creative brief to being on standby 24 hours a day, especially as our work also encompasses that from foreign markets,” Gomes adds.
